What is the Transplant Association of Hawaii?

The Transplant Association of Hawaii (TAH) is a non-profit organization, working to improve the quality of life of transplant candidates, recipients, donors and their families in Hawaii. Its mission, which is carried out by volunteers lay persons and medical professionals, focuses on:

  • Awareness - by promoting organ, tissue, and eye donation as an important social issue;
  • Support - by providing support to transplant candidates, recipients, donors and their families to help alleviate the stresses and challenges associated with transplantation;
  • Education - by providing current information about organ, tissue, and eye donation, transplantation, medications, social issues and finances; and
  • Advocacy - by making know the needs and concerns that affect the welfare of transplant candidates, recipients, donors and their families.


What is the relationship between Transplant Association of Hawaii and the National Kidney Foundation?

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) has 52 affiliates throughout the United States, which includes an affiliate here in Hawaii, the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii (NKFH);

The NKF also has three National Councils, which includes the transAction Council which was developed to help ensure the best possible care for transplant recipients of all organs;

TAH is Hawaii's transAction Council supported by the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii.

Can you tell me more about the transAction Council?

Established in 1996, the transAction Council is committed to actively meeting the unique needs and concerns of individuals with all types of organ transplants. The Council is a constituent council of the National Kidney Foundation.

Mission Statement: To ensure a better quality of life for transplant recipients and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.

To effectively represent the diversity within the transplant community, our executive committee is comprised entirely of transplant recipients, including heart, liver, and lung, as well as kidney.

    GOALS

  • Advocacy - to serve as an advocate for transplant recipients in legislative and medical issues;
  • Standards of Care - to increase retention of transplanted organs;
  • Programs and Services - to create and implement educational and support programs that enhance the lives of transplant recipients and their families;
  • Communication - to identify ways to enhance communication and understanding between transplant recipients, their family members and their health care team;
  • Awareness - to increase organ donation through a greater public understanding of the donation process and the positive impact of successful transplants.


What are some membership benefits?

Membership to TAH includes membership to the transAction Council so you will receive benefits from each group.

Local

  • Meetings (6) throughout the year include current information about organ, tissue, and eye donation, transplantation, medications, social issues, and finances;
  • Receive support from transplant recipients and family members;
  • Opportunities to promote organ, tissue, and eye donation to the general public at health fairs, special events, and other community activities;
  • Receive a monthly newsletter.

National

  • Opportunity to share opinions and have a voice in legislative and public policy issues;
  • Timely legislative, medical and educational information updates;
  • Complimentary subscriptions to Transplant Chronicles, a quarterly publication that focuses on current topics in transplantation and transAction Council Connection, the council's quarterly membership update newsletter.
