National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii : Hawaii Donor Family Council
Hawaii Donor Family Council

The Hawaii Donor Family Council
The Hawaii Donor Family Council is dedicated to serving families of those who gave the gift of life and providing a strong, unified voice in meeting their needs and a safe haven as they learn to live without the ones they love.

The Hawaii Donor Family Council is the local chapter of the National Donor Family Council(NDFC). The National Donor Family Council, founded in 1992 by the National Kidney Foundation, is the oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated exclusively to the needs of tissue, eye and organ donor families.

The Hawaii Donor Family Council provides an accessible and immediate source of advocacy and support for Hawaii's donor families.

The Hawaii Donor Family Council shares the NDFC mission:

  • To enhance the sensitivity and effectiveness of the organ and tissue procurement process;
  • To provide opportunities for families to grieve and grow, and
  • To utilize the unique perspective and experiences of these families to increase organ and tissue donation.

Like the NDFC, the Hawaii Donor Family Council is committed:

  • To support the needs and expectations of all organ and tissue donor families;
  • To serve as an advocate and provide support;
  • To assist health care professionals who work most closely with these families;
  • To work collaboratively with all organizations in the transplant, bereavement and professional communities;
  • To help educate public to increase donation;
  • To support existing, and develop new, high quality programs to meet the ongoing needs of families and those professionals involved in their care.

Membership is free and open to all families who donate tissues and/or organs, and friends, including:

  • Families whose loved ones died and donated their organs and/or tissues;
  • Families who would have liked to donate, but could not due to medical or other reasons;
  • Families who did not donate, but might have if they had been given the opportunity; and

Health care professionals are invited to join as Council liaisons. Membership in the Hawaii Donor Family
Council includes membership in the National Donor Family Counciland all resources and member benefits of the NDFC.
